The recent
contribution of Robert (Bobby) Keller to protect the James Covered Bridge from
over-size farm equipment is impressive, but not surprising. I have known the
Keller family over half of a century and they have served for years as the
principle unpaid advocates for the preservation of the historic and
irreplaceable James Covered Bridge.
The two covered bridges in Jennings County are major tourist
attractions which produce revenues for the entire county, especially those
businesses located in close proximity to the bridges. These businesses have a
bottom line interest in the preservation of the bridges.
During the recent major renovation of the James Covered
Bridge the value of the bridge to mega-farms in the area could be easily
measured in lost productivity and added fuel and manpower costs.
Some readers may question my continued, long distant
interest in this matter. In 1947 Jennings County represented a modern day
Promised Land for my family; until age 21, I called Jennings County home; for
20 years as member of the USAF I paid Indiana State Income Tax; and I have many
relatives and friends who live and work in Jennings County.
Protecting our covered bridges preserves the past and serves
as a visible monument to a brighter economic future for all.
