My three grand children that live with us are out of school for the summer. They seem so very happy and full of anticipation of all the joys of being on the outside of the school house.
This time of year has a Time Machine impact upon me as I recall my own feelings as a young boy when school was out. The last day of school meant extremely long recesses and our teachers seemed as joyous as the students. There were a few get even fights on the school yard. I remember one in which an older student struck a younger student with max force on the thigh of his leg. Years later I mentioned the fight to a brother of the younger student who said he had no memory of such an event. I was glad to hear that because it meant no serious injury resulted.
My cousins and I knew school vacation meant we could crank up our fishing adventures. The Great Graham Creek was our passport to the best times a young lads could have anytime, anywhere.
My Dad put me to work in the yard and garden. I was far from being totally free to follow my own inclinations. I did not like the gardening. My younger brother had the same Green Thumb as our Dad. Either one of them could grow a tomato on a cement road. I was always day dreaming of events beyond the fences.
In this high tech age, our children have video games, computers, and cell phones to occupy their free time. I am so glad I had the super summers that included cane poles, hooks, and fishing worms.
Life goes on!

Thick and Thin
Several years ago, a friend at church told me this story:
When he went to work at Tinker Air Force Base in the Air Condition section a fellow worker welcomed him and told him how glad they were to see him join their work team. He went on to say, "We will stick with you through Thick and Thin. When things get Thick for you, we'll Thin out !!!"
