CONFESSIONS OF A BIBLIOPHILE v2.0

                                 Confessions of a Bibliophile

I am drawn to books like iron filings in a cheap chemistry set are attracted to a magnet. The recent Friends of the Library book sale at the Shawnee Library once more captured me. I did hold out until the “Buck-a-Bag” sale started. Here are a few general, unscientific observations:

     *The report of the death of book sales has been greatly exaggerated---apologies to Mark Twain.

     *The sale is a definite Win-Win situation---Used books make inexpensive, yet appreciated gifts.

     *Fiction---especially Romance---are big sellers.

     *Poetry is an endangered genre.

     *Current political books are probably quickly given away.

     *Children/parents love to search for age appropriate books.

     *”How To” books are hits and Sports books are strikeouts.

     *Contemporary biographies trump historical counterparts.

     *Diligent book searches are usually amply rewarded.

     *Contemporary culture books are out-of-date when printed.

     *Volunteer helpers were cheerful and very helpful.  

In the event I am sought by law enforcement officials, my wife has been instructed to tell them to stake out the book stores and book sales and sooner or later I’ll show up!

EVERY BOY HAD ONE OR HAD ACCESS TO ONE.
THE ONLY TWO GAGS I EVER OWNED WAS FAKE VOMIT AND A HANDSHAKE BUZZER. I SPENT MANY HOURS THINKING OF STUDENTS I COULD PULL SOME GAGS ON. ITCHING POWDER WAS ONE I REALLY WANTED. MAN, THE WHOLE SCHOOL COULD BE SCRATCHING AT THE SAME TIME!


MOST WERE PRETTY MILD. A FLY IN A PLASTIC ICE CUBE. GOGGLE-EYE GLASSES, FAKE SNOT, AND FAKE CUT THUMB. HOWEVER, SOME WERE LESS MILD: EXPLODING INK PENS, HOT POWDER FLAVORED CHEWING GUM, AND GROSS STINK BOMBS.


THE COMPANY IS STILL IN BUSINESS; HOWEVER, THE REAL FUN ITEMS ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE!

THIS IS AS REAL AS IT GETS.





A TEENAGER’S KINDNESS

As I type this Post the musical soundtrack to the wonderful Victory at Sea TV series is playing in the back ground. A teenage neighbor, Wright H., invited my brother and I to watch each Sunday afternoon episode on his family’s TV. I don’t think we missed any episodes. We got a TV two years later.


The beautiful music helped cement the sights and sounds firmly in my young memory. The Victory at Sea shows created in me a certain national pride and deep patriotism. Furthermore, I became acutely aware of the heroic sacrifices of our brave service members, the industrial base back home, and the anxiously awaiting families of these brave body guards of freedom. I later learned I had an uncle who was in N. Africa with forces commanded by General Patton. Uncle Mac drove a truck.


It is not a stretch to acknowledge this teenager’s kindness to my brother and I as a major deep definer of our sense of duty, honor and country. Sadly, I never told him the impact his kindness had upon my life. If any of his surviving family members read this, Wright H. was a difference maker, even as a teenager, in my life and my 20 year USAF experience. A very belated salute and heartfelt thanks for a job well done.

WHAT I WAS LIKE OR WAS IT WHAT I LIKED ?

No matter how we might try and disguise it our written thoughts tell even strangers a lot about us. In addition, what I write tells volumes about what I like. Even what I don't like.


Most of us, at our age at least, think about life after we are gone. I know where I am headed and have no fear of that. I do so want my grandchildren and maybe others that care to know about what I thought and what I liked. Each of us want to leave a footprint of our short journey on this planet. I have a ton of notebooks and other pieces of paper that tell much about me.


I confess, without apology, that one of the reasons, not the main one, of writing this Blog is to maybe leave a written reminder of who I was and what I enjoyed. Also, it serves as great therapy for me as we raise three grandchildren and I help my semi-invalid bride. Life many times doesn't turn out like we hoped. But God knows best and provides the resources to get through it. Some preacher once said, "If God brings you to it; He'll get you through it!"


Music serves as a time post of my life. The early formative years still are so real to me. Yes, I have more than my share of early regrets. My early plans were revised more than once. But at the end of the day, heartaches never win.


Yes, some of the Posts are written with a view to remind a special few of the great times we enjoyed together. I will never forget them--never!

Without warning a family you had not seen, or heard from, in 8 years shows up at your door at 9:30pm on a Friday night.


"Sherry, it is so nice to see you. Please come in."


"Mary. I can't stay long. Just wanted to say hello and we'll continue looking for a motel. Seems like most have "No Vacancy."


"Yeah, the annual week long "Old West Rodeo" is in town. The mayor says it is good for business and sales tax but traffic is horrible and just try and get into any restaurant!"

"WHAT IS THE GOVERNMENT?"



                                 “What Is The Government?”

I have just returned from Indiana where I helped lay my 100 year old father to rest. Memory tapes have been playing in my mind now for several days. Some are funny and some are sad. Some are the sort of experiences that tend to shape and mold our lives.

One such experience happened when I was about nine years of age. I was walking with my father to the most distant field on our small farm. Even to this day I can take anyone to the exact spot where this incident occurred. This was during the time when rural families would sit and watch the radio! My father insisted that my brother and I be silent while the news was on the radio. I had listened to enough newscasts to have heard of something called the “government.”  On that memorable day, just a father and young son walking together, I asked, “Dad, what is the government?” Without hesitation and with absolute certainty he replied, “Son, in America the government is the people.” Dad’s answer then was far from this small boy’s understanding.


Subsequent schooling and 20 years of proudly wearing this nation’s uniform served to bring my father’s short, yet

laser like answer into sharp focus. Over the years I shared his love for American history, especially about fellow Kentuckian, Abraham Lincoln. Just a year ago I sent him a magazine about Lincoln at Gettysburg. I like to think his answer to me when I was nine first echoed on that scared battlefield when President Lincoln said, ”… that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom. . . and that government of the people. . .by the people. . .for the people. . . shall not perish from the earth.
