CONFESSIONS OF A BIBLIOPHILE v2.0

PUBLISHED 10-20-15 LETTERS TO EDITOR:SHAWNEE NEWS- STAR

                                 Confessions of a Bibliophile

I am drawn to books like iron filings in a cheap chemistry set are attracted to a magnet. The recent Friends of the Library book sale at the Shawnee Library once more captured me. I did hold out until the “Buck-a-Bag” sale started. Here are a few general, unscientific observations:

*The report of the death of book sales has been greatly exaggerated---apologies to Mark Twain.

*The sale is a definite Win-Win situation---Used books make inexpensive, yet appreciated gifts.

     *Fiction---especially Romance---are big sellers.

     *Poetry is an endangered genre.

*Current political books are probably quickly given away.

*Children/parents love to search for age appropriate books.

*”How To” books are hits and Sports books are strikeouts.

     *Contemporary biographies trump historical counterparts.

*Diligent book searches are usually amply rewarded.

*Contemporary culture books are out-of-date when printed.

*Volunteer helpers were cheerful and very helpful.

In the event I am sought by law enforcement officials, my wife has been instructed to tell them to stake out the book stores and book sales and sooner or later I’ll show up!
