A LOVE LETTER IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR

Alexander Hamilton

Currently, I am reading a wonderful biography of Alexander Hamilton. The basics of his life are generally well known.--Born in the Caribbean (mother not married to his father); business leader at 17; educated at Kings College (now Columbia); aide to General Washington; first Secretary of the Treasury; and killed by Aaron Burr in a duel.

He indeed is the forgotten hero of the War. His many adventures are in this book (Alexander Hamilton: A Life by Willard Randall). I will share a portion of a love letter he wrote to Lady "Kitty" Livingston. She had many suitors and he sought to separate himself from the field---this letter, to me is very special:

"I challenge you to meet me in whatever path you dare. If you have no objection, for variety and amusement, we will even sometimes make excursions in the flowery walks and roseate bowers of Cupid. You know I am renown for gallantry and shall always be able to entertain you with a choice collection of prettiest things imaginable."

What girl would not be impressed with this letter? Hamilton however, did not marry her. He was something of a playboy--so much in fact---Martha Washington named her prowling camp cat, Hamilton.

  1. It is my observation that men show who they really are in a Love Letter. However, women go to great links not to show who they really are in a Love Letter. Anyone disagree? Feel free to comment.
