WORDS HAVE MEANING---"Rebuff"

As kids we learned the little song: "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words shall never harm me" (I've said that before in an earlier post)

As adults we learned that words, and more particularly, actions associated with words do indeed hurt. Words are like arrows-----once launched they cannot  "unshoot." The Bible, especially in Proverbs and James, says much about hurtful words and actions.

On a positive note, a word fitly spoken can do tremendous good.

Since my earliest recollection, I have been fascinated by words and the mental images they paint. That is one reason why I enjoy poetry so much. I good poem lets you fill in the blanks from your own experiences and understanding.

With that rather long prelude, the word for today is "rebuff." What follows are some insights from several sources on the Internet.

THE PUZZLE PALACE

WHAT FOLLOWS APPEARED IN THE SHAWNEE NEWS-STAR:

March 11, 2013

Shawnee News-Star

Letters to the editor:

The Pentagon and Secretary of Defense has lately been much in the news.

By the Grace of God, and a bit of good luck, I was able to avoid a permanent assignment to the “Puzzle Palace” (military jargon for the Pentagon). Several temporary duty assignments and discussions with military and civilian personnel assigned there provide the background for this letter.

The Pentagon is unbelievably large in physical size and thousands of people work there. Commuting to work is a daily clock burning adventure. I think I may have talked to the all-time long distance commuter. He drove three hours, each way, from Pennsylvania. Fortunately, he had only six months to go before retirement.

Considerable effort is expended to put a public “purple face ”on decisions. Purple represents the coordinated position of all service uniform colors. In fact, I just had to catch a drink of water from the only purple water fountain in the building.

Below the Joint Chiefs level of command, some real spirited and heated debate takes place between service staff officers. To a large extent, performance reports reflect the ability of a staff officer to defend their service’s position on hot button issues like roles and mission, force structure, base closures, budgeting, and Congressional inquiries. In most cases, day-to-day mission accomplishment is left to theater and field unit commanders.

The Pentagon is the Madison Square Garden for general and flag officers climbing the promotion ladder. Advancing careers are made or lost here.

Most of my service career was spent in field operations units. We had a saying: “Nothing is true until the Pentagon denies it three times!”

"THE LETTER"

During my high school, black and white TV, days I saw a two man play that remains a part of my slowly dissolving memory bank.

Two British officers were the best of friends and were stationed together in the remotest part of the Union Jack Kingdom. Mail was the only link that kept the troops connected to the world they had left behind.

Captain Jones (made up name) received lots of letters, including letters from Captain Smith's cheating wife. This illicit affair was unknown to Captain Smith who never received any mail.

Loneliness drove Captain Smith to the edge of suicide. He succeeded in making a deal with Captain Jones to purchase---sight unseen---one of Captain Jones' letters. The letters were placed face down, and for a very large sum, Captain Smith purchased his only letter.

Captain Smith refused to let Captain Jones know the contents of the letter. Panic grew as he contemplated the bought letter was really from Smith's wife addressed to Captain Jones. Jones tried to buy it back with no luck.

As days passed these good friends became bitter enemies. All of this animosity only served to strengthen Jones' fears. What if Smith discovered his best friend was carrying on this secret affair behind his back?

Murder was the only way out. Captain Jones killed Smith and rifled through his things. He quickly found the letter and withdrew the contents. It was an advertisement for a Macintosh (British for a raincoat!!!!!)

SEARCHING FOR THE UNSEEN HAND

Lost in the land of almost awake
My palm down silent hand moves
In random directions toward her
Her slowly moving hand finds mine

Words forbidden in land oft traveled
Our knowing fingers unite in darkness
Squeezes that imitate the grasp of babies
Daylight breaks anew but not our hands

WW II---The Seminal Event in Our Lifetime

The geopolitical and economic consequences of the allied victory cannot be overstated.

Consider these factors that can be traced to the WW II:

1. The new role of women in the workforce outside the home

2. The rapid advances in technology, esp---aviation & electronics

3. The draft and death touch many, many homes

4.  Forced white America to take first feeble steps toward integration

5. Hastened the flight from the farm to the cities

6. Changed completely the voice and tenor of popular music

7. Introduced many Americans to the larger world

8. Proved Americans could get by with less

9. Formed the foundation for the post-War building and baby boom

10. Had a major impact upon faith and trust in all religions

Tom Brokaw said it best. "The Greatest Generation"

""SKIP A ROPE" -------Henson Cargill V 2.0

This simple song has never been more applicable than it is today.

Henson Cargill
Skip A Rope lyrics

(CHORUS)
Skip a rope, skip a rope
Oh, listen to the children
While they play
Now ain't it kinda funny
What the children say
Skip a rope

Daddy hates mommy
Mommy hates dad
Last night you shoulda heard
The fight they had

Gave little sister
Another bad dream
She woke us all up
With a terrible scream

(CHORUS)

Cheat on your taxes
Don't be a fool
Now what was that they said
About a golden rule

Never mind the rules
Just play to win
And hate your neighbor
For the shade of his skin

(CHORUS)

Stab em in the back
That's the name of the game
And mommy and daddy
Are who's to blame

Skip a rope, skip a rope
Just listen to your children
While they play
It's really not very funny
What the children say
Skip a rope, skip a rope
Skip a rope, skip a rope

RAIN DROPS KEEP FALLING ON MY MINI-VAN

Oklahoma has been in an extreme drought for several months. Today a massive blizzard hit the western portion of the Sooner state. Our side of the state got rain. We received a much needed slow steady rain for several hours.

On one of my many daily trips I returned home and just sat in the mini-van listening to the the Heaven sent moisture. Made me feel like a kid again.

"HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY" ---George Jones

I AM AN UNREPENTANT   CLASSIC COUNTRY MUSIC FAN. MOST CLASSIC COUNTRY TELLS A STORY. GEORGE JONES IS ONE OF THE ALL-TIME GREATS.

YOU CAN WATCH HIM SING THIS SONG ON YOU TUBE. THE LYRICS RESONATE WITH ME. HOPE YOU LIKE THEM ALSO:

    HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY

Written by R. V. Braddock and C. Putman, Jr.

He said I'll love you 'til I die
She told him you'll forget in time
As the years went slowly by
She still preyed upon his mind

He kept her picture on his wall
Went half crazy now and then
He still loved her through it all
    Hoping she'd come back again

Kept some letters by his bed
    Dated 1962
    He had underlined in red
    Every single I love you

I went to see him just today
Oh but I didn't see no tears
All dressed up to go away
First time I'd seen him smile in years

    (Chorus)
    He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
    He stopped loving her today

    (Spoken)
You know she came to see him one last time
Oh and we all wondered if she would
And it kept running through my mind
This time he's over her for good

    (Repeat Chorus)

    3. Loaning someone a book is the same as giving it away.

RECENTLY UNEARTHED HISTORY OF COUNTY JENNINGSHIRE

AN HISTORIC ARCHAEOLOGICAL DISCOVERY HAS CAST NEW LIGHT ON THE EARLY HISTORY OF COUNTY JENNINGSHIRE. PARCHMENTS FOUND IN  NIXON'S CAVE REVEAL NEW INSIGHTS ON THE EARLY DAYS OF OUR COUNTY. THE CONTENTS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

Once upon a time the normally hostile fiefdoms of County Jenningshire came together to attempt to solve a troublesome common problem. Those present included:

                                             The Maid of Marion
                                              Robin of Lovett
                                              Count & Countess of Commiskey
                                              Viscount of Vernon
                                              Duke & Duchess of Deputy
                                              Wizard of Weston Bottoms
                                              Witch of Walnut Ridge
                                               Ira of Whitaker
                                                (aka Sheriff of Nottingham)
                                               Prince of Paris Crossing
The problem was a band of undisciplined youth operating as Pirates on the Great Graham Creek. The Pirates, both boys and girls, were boarding ships, stealing the cargo and sinking the ships. In addition, the Pirates were burning barns, stealing livestock, and cutting donuts in the hay fields. All efforts to stop them proved futile.

Several solutions were proposed. Most dealt with the complete eradication of the youth. However, it was quickly pointed out that  new replacements would arrive every year and the problem would start all over again.

It was the Prince of Paris Crossing who came up with a solution that was quickly adopted. Build a prison, we'll call it a school, and require all youth to attend for four years. After that their sentences would be commuted and set free. To ensure youth would attend, the school mascot would be the Pirates.

Brilliant solution. The problems of the Pirates on the Great Graham Creek were solved and guards, called teachers, were hired to keep the youth at the school during the day.

And they all lived happily ever after, Well, most did.

    THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY

    1. Barry Day was originally imagined to be a rich city cousin of Bubba and Junior. The boys were to visit Barry with all sort of resulting mayhem during the visit . As you have seen, Bubba and Junior never made the story because it quickly developed in another direction. My writing is "Like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get."

    2. I have been on all of the military bases mentioned in the story. (Plus a couple of dozen more). Each one has a wealth of experiences that make an endless source of characters and plots. Shemya might require multiple volumes!

    3. Unintentionally, the end of the story has many possible interpretations. I hit upon the ending as something of a surprise Dickensesque finale. After writing and rewriting, I discovered there could easily be all sorts of hidden meaning.  Here's a few:

        a. Barry truly learned to forgive Lisa and wished her well.

        b. Barry was still in love with Lisa and wanted to rekindle the fire.
        c. Barry saw this as an opportunity to get even by giving her the opportunity to fail on the loan. He could then repo the double-wide. She had "repoed" her love from him many years ago.

        d. Barry wanted to make a statement that he was again on top and she missed out on the opportunity of a lifetime.

While I ended the story with no thought of continuing it, I can now see that the door is slightly ajar for additional writing using these same characters. As of this point in time, I have no plans to continue the story.

Writing serves as therapy for me. I am grateful to readers of this Blog and their continued encouragement!

LISA AND BARRY "LUCKY" DAY---PART 4

              PLEASE READ PARTS 1,2 & 3 FIRST

                                                          YOU CAN GO HOME AGAIN

LISA AND BARRY "LUCKY" DAY--PART 4

Had Barry’s long streak of luck been broken? Was he just another ordinary guy after all? Barry got a three week leave and went back to Felderburg to get himself together. He spent much of the time alone. On Friday night just before he went back to Minot he attended the opening night at the annual German Wurst Fest.  Things would never be the same after that night.

It was a long accepted custom for tickets to be sold to determine who would have the first dance with the Wurst Fest queen---this year was Helda Wenderson. She was dressed in traditional German attire.  Her blond neatly braided pigtails and bright blue and white checkered dress with wide jumper straps highlighted her quiet outer and inner beauty.  Knee high white stockings amplified her shapely figure. Her genuine smile made a fellow want to wrap her up and take her home to mother. Her face reflected an innocent wholesomeness. Her smile was so captivating he felt as if he was beholding the original allurement of Eve in the unspoiled Garden of Eden. Barry would later learn she and her family moved from Milwaukee to Felderburg about the same time he and Lisa moved to Minot. Furthermore, her father was the pastor of the largest Lutheran church in Felderburg.

Sometimes a person must cast his bread upon the waters and see what happens. Barry bought one ticket and silently waited for the drawing. Barry’s ticket was drawn to start the official opening of the three day celebr dustation. Smiles and constant eye contact served as the main medium of conversation.

Barry asked and was granted permission to escort Queen Helda home. For the next two days the two of them were nearly inseparable. Barry felt as if each tender embrace and passionate kiss was the gateway to a timeless eternity and a star dust path to infinite space. He attempted twice to tell her the full details of his previous marriage. Each time she would softly say, “I know.”  Barry’s luck seemed to be back.

Strangely, old westerns again popped into his recollection. This time he was the ragged, bearded prospector that was more dead than alive and barely able to crawl to a life-saving fresh spring of water. Barry Day felt alive again. He was alive! He was alive! Hey world, I am alive!

He returned to Minot a totally different person than when he left. He phoned Helda every day; sometimes two or three times a day on weekends. A year later they were married in a small military ceremony at the base chapel. Thrown rice never felt so good. The crossed sword exit from the chapel seemed to Barry to be the portal to genuine and long lasting love. While Barry never said it out loud, his feelings for Helda were deeper even than those felt for Lisa. He thought to himself, Lisa was a speed boat and Helda is a three-masted, majestic, silent, old world, sailing ship. The speed boat had raced over the horizon never to return. The tall sailing ship was safely and forever in his home port. To love and be loved is the greatest thing a person can experience. Yes sir, Barry Day was lucky once more.

Within a month he received orders to Ramstein Air Base, Germany. Helda spoke perfect German and helped launch a four year dream tour of all the major countries of Europe.  Captain Day was the number two man in the base Accounting and Finance Office. Barry’s father developed terminal cancer and he separated after 8 years of active duty to help his mother take care of him.

Back in Felderburg, Barry became the director of the bank’s loan department and was widely recognized as the future bank president in waiting. He and Helda had twin boys, Joshua and Caleb, and lived in a house about four blocks from Helda’s parents. The Barry Day family became faithful members of her father’s Lutheran church.

What happened next was straight out of a Dickens’s novel. A subordinate brought a loan application to Barry to sign the Disapproval statement. The subordinate briefed Barry on the applicant’s lackluster financial status. She is a single mother of four young kids; works as a truck stop waitress; has a credit score of 420; been married three times; and wants to purchase a 10 year-old double wide trailer for $4,800.

Barry scanned the application and surprised his subordinate by approving the loan. He said, “Tell Lisa this is her Lucky Day!”
