WHAT DO YOU SAY AFTER 50+ YEARS?

            FIFTY PLUS YEARS LATER

Hide your current problems and big concerns
Pills, bills, grandkid frills forget them all now
Deaths, divorces, jobs, fears all wait for later

In a few minutes or an hour at most no boast
All the things you wish you had said must come
It will change nothing in the past just tomorrow

Today you'll let them know how you felt then
The grave closes all mouths, ears, and hearts
Perhaps like me you long for one more ........

NEW BIO FOR NEW BLOG READERS

LAST WEEK WE HAD BLOG READERS FROM 7 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES, 8 IF YOU ADD TEXAS. BELOW IS A NEW REVISED BIO. NEW BLOG READERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME!

Glenn was born at a very early age in a log cabin  that he helped his father build. His early childhood was marked by malnutrition and lack of clean drinking water. He was adopted by a Korean family and was sent a monthly care package of fish heads and rice. Often the fish heads would be stolen from the package by the rural mail man who had several undernourished children at home.

The lack of a proper diet soon produced embarrassing results. He was sent home from the third grade because he had so many cavities that he talked with an echo. His parents knew they could turn Glenn's funny speech to a profitable advantage. When the carnival left the county fair, Glenn  unwillingly left with them.

He toured the entire summer with the carnival and was billed as the World's Fastest Repeating Talker. Through the concern of the Three-Eyed Man and The Himalayan Yak Lady he was given a bus ticket home just before the start of the fourth grade. His parent's were so glad to see him they sold the family milk cow and pet turkey and had his teeth pulled and replaced with a used set of metal dentures. Unfortunately, as they left the dentist office a rogue bolt of lightening struck Glenn in the head, welding his young mouth shut.

It was not until his junior year in high school, when he enrolled in vocational welding, was he able to once again speak and eat normally.  During this new-found freedom he learned that 7-Up was not green and the earth was not flat.

After high school, he entered the military and worked on the development of the highly-classified crossbow. Following the Army, he put himself through correspondence night school and was elected president of his class. Armed with confidence, he wrote two New York Times Best Sellers:"Lawn Darts For Dummies" and "How To Quit Smoking In 80 Years."

He has served on the President's Council of Alchemy and spends most of his spare time attempting to develop a bio-degradable bubble gum. Glenn is a much sought-after speaker and welcomes invitations where a free meal will be served.

"OLD FOLKS AT HOME" aka "SWANEE RIVER"

PLEASE NOTE: Socio-economic conditions were very, very different in 1851 from today.

STEPHEN FOSTER IS ONE OF THE FORGOTTEN SONGWRITERS OF AMERICA TODAY----

Stephen Collins Foster (July 4, 1826 – January 13, 1864), known as "the father of American music", was an American songwriter primarily known for his parlor and minstrel music. Foster wrote over 200 songs; among his best-known are "Oh! Susanna", "Camptown Races", "Old Folks at Home", "My Old Kentucky Home", "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair", "Old Black Joe", and "Beautiful Dreamer". Many of his compositions remain popular more than 150 years after he wrote them. His compositions are thought to be autobiographical. He has been identified as "the most famous songwriter of the nineteenth century", and may be the most recognizable American composer in other countries. His compositions are sometimes referred to as "childhood songs" because they are included in the music curriculum of early education. Most of his handwritten music manuscripts are lost but copies printed by publishers of his day can be found in various collections (from Wikipedea)

The lyrics of Swanee River are seldom sung but the tune is one of the best loved in our country.

Stephen Foster, 1851
Way down upon the Swanee River,
Far, far away
That's where my heart is turning ever
That's where the old folks stay
All up and down the whole creation,
Sadly I roam
Still longing for the old plantation
And for the old folks at home
Chorus:
All the world is sad and dreary everywhere I roam
Oh darkies, how my heart grows weary
Far from the old folks at home
2. All 'round the little farm I wandered,
When I was young
Then many happy days I squandered,
Many the songs I sung
When I was playing with my brother,
Happy was I
Oh, take me to my kind old mother,
There let me live and die
Chorus:
2. One little hut among the bushes,
One that I love
Still sadly to my mem'ry rushes,
No matter where I rove
When shall I see the bees a humming,
All 'round the comb
When shall I hear the banjo strumming,
Down by my good old home
Chorus:

MUDDY HISTORICAL WATERS !

       MUDDY HISTORICAL WATERS!

All pertinent analogies and illustrations shine needed light to assist in establishing a better understanding of the truth.

Case in point: Many years ago I was fly fishing for grayling on a post card-worthy clear stream in Alaska. It was a warm, by Alaskan standards, sun-drenched Saturday afternoon. The water was so clear and the sun so bright that millions of flecks of pyrite could be seen joy riding down the stream.

After a brief time of scouting this new stream, I found an ideal location to try out some flies I tied. I made a  dozen casts without a strike; removed the unproductive fly and was in the process of tying on a sure winner when I noticed a small streak of muddy water in the middle of this pristine stream. In addition, I could hear faintly what sounded like a lawn mower.

Before completing a trio of casts, the small streak grew to cover a quarter of the width of the stream and the mower sound grew louder. My immediate thought was someone in a low-draft boat was striking the bottom with their motor.

I stopped fishing and was hoping this annoyance would soon stop and I could get back after the beautiful grayling. The muddy water now covered the entire stream and the motor noise seemed right behind me.

The mystery was quickly solved when I saw a scuba diver, with air pack, vacuuming the bottom of the stream depositing its gravel in a small flat bottom boat that was pulled along by the hose of the scuba diver. A small gas engine was providing the suction for this marine sweeper. An accomplice was in the boat quickly sorting the gravel and tossing most of the small rocks back into the stream. These impolite, probably illegal, amateur gold prospectors never acknowledged my presence nor I them. Fishing in this stream was now fruitless. I packed up and headed for my Suburban.
What is the retention value here? What happens upstream (History) has a marked impact on the present. In my opinion, historical deniers and their first cousins, historical revisionist, attempt to create a history that serves the template of their current positions. Witness the full court press  by the main stream media and certain current and hopeful office holders upon the Constitution and the Founding Fathers.

George Orwell summarized it so well— ‘He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past. ..

THE FUTURE WAS YESTERDAY!

I SUBMITTED THIS TO THE SHAWNEE NEWS-STAR FOR PUBLICATION:

                               The Future Was Yesterday!

“The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.” These haunting and prophetic words were uttered by British Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey on the eve of Britain’s entry into WWI. This one sentence statement could very well summarize what is happening now in Europe, and many other nations of the West, as hundreds of thousands of Middle Eastern refugees stretch the limits of national resources and citizen acceptance. The “tape” of human history is always in the replay mode.

In my opinion, the political, economic, and cultural continuation of some host nations is now problematic. Why? Consider:

1. The scope and speed of the refugee influx has created an unprecedented, unprepared crisis.

2. These refugees (many 18-25 year old males) bring a cultural and religious mindset that almost guarantees the failure of assimilation and certain conflict.

3. Vetting to weed out undesirables who are bent on the destruction of the West was limited to a wink and a nod. These zealots view accommodation as a weakness that must be destroyed.

4. The basic concept of human civil rights --- especially female rights --- is  patterned after medieval times for many of the refugees. For example, dress standards, equality before the law, education, voting rights, freedom of individual liberty, and even driving privileges for females is totally different than the universal civil rights of citizens in Western nations. Witness the growing litany of rapes, robberies, and assaults in Europe upon females by uncontrolled roving mobs of refugee thugs.

5. Massive economic displacement, especially entry level positions, is a prescription for disaster; especially, among the unskilled and poorly educated within indigenous populations.

During WWI George M. Cohan wrote that rousing and stirring patriotic tune “Over There.” Much less well known is a poem written by Edgar Guest, about the same time frame entitled: “Over Here.” Sadly the struggle against terror, especially after 9/11,  may have had its roots “Over There”, but as Director Clapper of National Intelligence has testified, terrorism, especially the diabolical ISIS flavor, is known to have come to our shores via the unvetted  influx of Middle Eastern refugees and an ISIS attack within the U.S. is likely this year!

In conclusion, what happened in Europe yesterday is almost certain to occur to the U.S. in the near future.

MAYBE IT IS JUST MY IMAGINATION !

THERE IS A CONVENTIONAL WISDOM ABOUT PEOPLE BECOMING MORE CHILDLIKE AS THEY AGE.

HERE'S MY TAKE ON ONE ASPECT OF AGING. OLD FOLKS BECOME GREAT AT LYING.

I AM NOT TALKING LITTLE WHITE LIES. I AM TALKING ABOUT A COMPLETE DENIAL OF WHAT MANY OTHER FOLKS KNOW TO BE TRUE.  IT IS NOT A MATTER OF JUST FACTUAL ACCURACY, BUT INCLUDES THE ENTIRE RANGE OF MORAL BEHAVIOR. DENIAL IS NOT A RIVER IN EGYPT !!!!

AND THEY HAVE A SKILLFUL MANNER OF MAKING THOSE WHO QUESTION THEIR TRUTHFULNESS TO BE THE BAD GUYS

I BELIEVE SOME FOLKS HAVE CONVINCED THEMSELVES THEY ARE RIGHT AND EVERYONE ELSE IS WRONG. SOME MIGHT BEAT A LIE DETECTOR TEST.

A GUY WHO OUGHT TO KNOW BETTER !!!!! V2.0

  ------------- ADDED NEW INFO------------

LETTER APPEARED IN 1-19-16 ISSUE

What follows is something I sent to the Shawnee News-Star Letters to the Editor. I feel very strongly about each American having the right to speak their mind. Also, I am very surprised at the stance taken by the publisher. This Letter to the Editor is a tongue-in-cheek attempt to maybe save his job. I think he had a bad day or stayed up too late watching WWE! No self-respecting newspaper person would ever deny the ordinary Joe a right to speak. Even if this never sees ink, he will be shown my letter by the editor.

I ADMIT IT!  I TOOK THE BAIT!

OK! OK! I admit it! I was fooled! Publisher ****'s January 14th column "Leave political commentary to the experts"  caused me not only to rise to it, I responded to it by adding this comment to the internet version of his column:

"Hold on there Pilgrim!" The professionals have led us to the brink of destruction. Somewhere I remember something about "WE THE PEOPLE." I recall a Flower Power VW mini-bus that passed me in 1968 with a bumper sticker that said "MY VOTE CANCELS YOUR VOTE!" In America every vote counts; every American counts; and every opinion counts! Remember---Joe the Plumber had a right to speak his mind.

All weekend I kept asking myself why would a bright, young newspaper publisher whose principles and pocketbook depend upon Freedom of Speech write such a column? Was it to hasten his departure from Shawnee? Not very likely in view of his concern for our community. Was it an attempt to stifle  Letters to the Editor? No! He knows next to Obituaries the Opinion pages are close behind in readership. What then was the motivation?

Sunday afternoon it finally hit me. The column was a ruse. A canard. A false flag. A very skillful think piece to awaken the public to their rights and responsibilities to become more---not less---involved in the political process.

Publisher ****, you fooled me! A big salute and a tip of the cap for reminding us what a wonderful country we live in.

SOMETHING AMAZING IS HAPPENING !!!

TWO SEPARATE PHOTOS CANNOT BE IGNORED:

Mechaele Loraffe of Buchanan, Michigan, said she was on her way to work when she saw a breathtaking sunrise and pulled over to take a photograph. Her picture, which appears to show a cross on the horizon, is going viral since she shared it with WSBT meteorologists Matt Rudkin. Loraffe said that she only saw the cross after she took the photo.

JENNINGS COUNTY ROYALTY REVEALED !!!!

Like most residents of Jennings County, Indiana in the 1950's my knowledge of royalty was limited to the Country entertainer "The Duke of Paducah" and Queen Elizabeth II who took the coronation oath  in 1953. A girl in the 4th grade at Lovett Grade School kept a scrapbook of this historic event.

Later, Grace Kelly and Lady Diana gave all Americans another glimpse into the royal society.
Prince William and Prince Harry showed us the human side of British Royalty

Recently discovered stone tablets reveal that only Jennings County in Southern Indiana had a thriving Royal society. This discovery is not mentioned in any history books because of Americans aversion to Royal rule. King George III learned that the hard way.

The tablets are still being decoded. However, enough has been achieved to reveal some of the personages of the Royal family. Here is what we now know::

Baroness of Butlerville---Very beautiful but given to unusual behavior.

Viscount of Vernon---Spent most of his idle hours cat fishing, gathering mushrooms, and staging mock battles.

Countess of Commiskey---May have developed the first B&B in North America.

Princess of Paris Crossing---Strong advocate for education and liked long haired guitar players.

Prince of Paris---Filled with ambition and sought to make his area the capitol of the Kingdom.

Lady Lovett---Played the field, married, but never found her true love.

Lord Lovett---His goals and horizons too big for Lady Lovett. Married, but never found his true love

Maid Marion---Thought to have been distant relative of Bonnie Parker ---Her 3 sons were Boyz of the Hood!

10 Questions about your Neighbors

UNLESS YOU LIVE ON AN ICEBERG, YOU HAVE NEIGHBORS. WHAT KIND OF NEIGHBORS DO YOU HAVE?

1. Are your neighbors Hopeless? Helpless? Hapless?

2. Your neighbors are hosting a backyard reception for their daughter's wedding. Would you Turn on Your Lawn Sprinklers? Call 911 to Complain of the Noise? Send your Large Drone over to Drop Rice? In the 5 lb box?

3. Would it bother you if your neighbor's 20 foot Boa got loose? They started a backyard Hog Farm? They replaced all of their outside lights with Red Bulbs?

4. Your neighbor's 14 year old Geeky son develops a water balloon launcher that will send a water balloon 1/2 mile. Chances are he is in store for a full ride to MIT? Presidential guided tour of the White House? Six months in Juvenile Detention?

5. The wife next door looks like Bridget Bardot at 27. The husband looks like Captain Kangaroo? Freddy Krueger? Gabby Hayes?

6. Would you loan your neighbor your leaky canoe for their vacation? Malfunctioning GPS unit? Out-of-date first aid kit?

7. Your neighbor is nearly killed in an auto accident. Would you send a large Venus Flytrap to the hospital? Mow their 8'X10' front yard for $100? Pickup their mail and read it?

8. The teenage daughter of your neighbor throws some loud Wild Parties when Mom/Dad are away. Would you call 911? Call their house to complain? Order $250 of pizzas to be delivered to their house (COD)?

9. Your neighbor always borrows your fishing rods for his family's Colorado vacations. Without him knowing it, you replace the 15 lb test line with 1 lb test? Call the Colorado Fish & Game and report him as a serial poacher? Ask him to loan you his new Lexus for your 3 month Alaskan fishing adventure?

10. Your neighbor has a yard that looks like a Nat Geo location. To encourage him to clean it up you could: Place a dozen pink flamingos in the front yard? Start a neighborhood rumor that you have discovered gold in your backyard? Secretly nominate his address for "Yard of the Month?"

NFL Fans At Their Worst

I am not a big NFL fan. Not a big NBA fan (have seen the OKC Thunder once). But I am a big Cincinnati Reds fan.

On the NFL front--I do look at the Dallas, Indy, and Bengals scores. The Cincinnati Enquirer had a story January 11, 2016 that addressed the conduct of fans when the Bengals lost again in the playoffs.

Six gents were arrested, Interestingly, the complaints were:

Gentleman (?) # 1 "....punched the woman in the head, causing her to fall to the ground, according to court documents.

# 2 is accused of punching a woman in the face as he exited Paul Brown Stadium around 10

#3 he urinated on the person in front of him in Paul Brown Stadium. Cooke,
Close

who wore a Bengals hoodie

Police said David Grillo, 25, of Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania, walked up an aisle in the stadium and threw a beer at a fan during the game. Grillo was wearing a black jersey at the time, police said, and his Facebook page indicates he is a Steelers fan. The beer hit the fan in the face and caused lacerations, police said. Grillo is accused of assault. His court date is not yet scheduled.
A Cheviot man who wore a black shirt to the game, is accused of head-butting a man in the face. Phillip Ross, 29, was arrested at Paul Brown Stadium and is accused of assault. His Facebook page suggests Ross is a Bengals fan.
Andrew Robles, 28, of Allentown, Pennsylvania, was being ejected from the game for an unknown reason when, police said, he escaped officers and punched a woman in the face.

"IF IT IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE....."

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This is a work of fiction and all persons, events, and related information is a product of my over-active imagination.

Jill Thompson was neither a country gal or a city slicker. She was born and grew up in a small country town in Wanokia, OK. To the west of this village of 2918 residents was the Little Sahara sand dunes that was a regional Mecca for dune buggies and assorted 4-Wheel ATVs.

Uncle Walter took her on his 4-Wheeler when she as 19 months old. Neither Mom or Dad knew about it at the time. Jill's Dad always said Uncle Walter thought he was bullet proof and never got over the Vietnam War. The three failed marriages of Uncle Walter gave substantial evidence to support his assertion.

Uncle Walter retired as parts manager for the local John Deere dealership after 37 years of service. To the east of Wanokia was the beginning of the famed wheat belt of Oklahoma. During harvest season the large bug-eyed combines at night looked like slow-moving, other-worldly, monster space machines.

In high school Jill worked as a waitress in the Home Town café and gas stop. During harvest time she would often work well past midnight serving the local wheat and cattle ranchers and professional wheat cutters who each year transited  Texas, OK, Kansas, Nebraska, the Dakotas on their way to So. Canada. The work was hard in the field and in the café during these hectic three weeks. Jill would sometimes make as much as $50 in tips in her day and night shift. Many wheat cutters started each day with a cup of coffee and a sweet roll and would not eat again until they were through for the evening. Big appetites produce big tips. She once received a crisp $100 bill as a tip for bringing an assortment of sandwiches, chips and five gallon of sweet tea to the field where a travelling crew of cutters was frantically trying to finish an entire 640 acre section before an approaching storm hit. To make matters worse, they were four days behind their promised Kansas start date. Just as soon as the OK job was completed they were loading and heading north.

Just as Jill slowly returned to the café in her old Ford pickup large raindrops pelted her windshield. When she reached the porch of the 55-year old café the caravan of travelling cutters she had fed in the field flew by honking their horns and waving. She spontaneously blew a couple of kisses to the happy crew. That's the least she could do for a $100 tip.

"WHERE'S MY CANDY BAR?" V2.0

HOW MUCH IS LOVE WORTH ?

New info at end of this Post

(NOTE: I cannot say if this story is real or not. Here it is as I understand it.)

Seems this man, his wife and granddaughter were in Wal-Mart prior to Christmas. The wife and granddaughter were in the Wal-Mart beauty shop and the man did some quick grocery shopping. As it is here and elsewhere, Wal-Mart was packed. He fought the crowds and put the food in the car. He returned to find the granddaughter was through with her appointment and his wife still in the chair.

Here is where it gets a bit scary. The man who is a borderline diabetic started sweating and shaking and knew he needed something sweet. He sent the granddaughter back into the store to pick up a couple of candy bars. When she returned he quickly ate a bar of candy and the granddaughter ate the other one. Within minutes he was trending normal.

His wife completed her appointment and joined her husband and granddaughter. The husband tried to quickly tell the story of his close call and how the granddaughter saved the day by buying two candy bars. Without asking any details or if he was feeling better she snapped, “Why didn’t you buy me one?” Maybe love is only worth the price of a candy bar!

NEW: Today I was informed a second event like the one above happened. The gent mentioned their granddaughter once more got a candy bar for a shaky grandpa. Rather than inquire about his well fair she blurted out, "Where did you get a candy bar? There is no candy in the house! He explained she got the bar at a convenience store. Sounds like this couple doesn't need Dr. Phil. They need Judge Judy!
